Safety Guidelines
Essential considerations for facilitating mental health discussions safely and effectively.
Emergency Situations: If someone expresses immediate risk of harm to themselves or others, contact emergency services immediately and follow your organization's safeguarding procedures.
Core Safety Principles
Follow these essential guidelines to create a supportive environment for all participants
Create a Safe Space
Ensure the physical and emotional environment feels secure for all participants
- Choose a quiet, private location free from interruptions
- Arrange seating in a circle or semi-circle to encourage connection
- Have tissues and water available
- Ensure good lighting and comfortable temperature
Make Participation Voluntary
Respect individual boundaries and comfort levels throughout the session
- Clearly state that sharing is optional at the beginning
- Offer alternatives like 'pass' or silent reflection
- Never pressure anyone to share personal experiences
- Respect different cultural approaches to emotional expression
Signpost Support Resources
Provide clear information about where participants can get additional help
- Share local mental health resources and helplines
- Provide written resource lists participants can take away
- Know your organization's referral procedures
- Be prepared to connect individuals with immediate support if needed
Manage Disclosures Appropriately
Handle personal sharing with care and professional boundaries
- Thank participants for sharing without giving advice
- Redirect focus to coping strategies rather than problems
- Know when and how to make safeguarding referrals
- Maintain confidentiality within the group
Warning Signs to Watch For
Be alert to these signs that may indicate a participant needs additional support
- Expressions of hopelessness or suicidal thoughts
- Significant changes in behavior or appearance
- Withdrawal from group activities or discussion
- Excessive emotional distress that doesn't subside
- Disclosure of abuse or immediate danger
